UNESCO named Sharjah as the World Book Capital for the year 2019. This honour is a recognition of the pioneering role in supporting and expanding the local and regional publishing industries by the Emirate. The accolade was granted after deliberations by international committee of UNESCO experts at the Headquarters of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) at La Haye.

Sharjah is the 19th city to become World Book Capital. It’s annual cultural calendar is packed with programmes and activities with more than 300,000 visitors annually. Numerous initiatives like Knowledge without Borders (KwB),  ‘Kitabi Al Awal’ (My First Book) are examples that promote reading.
