Dubai hospitals typically have a workforce of many nationalities, faiths and languages spoken. Ateam of researchers recently completed a study surveying 66 wards of Dubai Hospital, Latifa Hospital and Rashid Hospital to find out the effects of diversity. They concluded that diversity is unquestionably good but poses some challenges at high levels. Dr Carmela Di Mauro, one of the researchers felt the addition of new cultural values, mindsets and points of view contributes to more effective decision-making.
The relationship between the hospital teams’ religious diversity and their efficiency, when plotted on a graph, produced an inverted U-shape. Surgical teams had stronger effects of this compared to non surgical teams. The study was published in the British Journal of Management titled “Does Religious Diversity in Health Team Composition Affect Efficiency? Evidence from Dubai”.
